What Is a Balance Bike, and Why Should Kids Start Here?

A balance bike is a pedal-free bike that teaches kids to balance first. Here's how it helps your child develop — and what age to start.

What Is a Balance Bike, and Why Should Kids Start Here?

What is a balance bike?

A balance bike is a kids' bike with no pedals and no training wheels. Your child sits on the saddle and pushes along the ground with their feet to move and to stop. As they get quicker they lift their feet and glide — and that glide is balance, learned naturally.

Because nothing gets in the way, a child practises the one skill that actually matters on two wheels first: balance.

Why balance comes before pedalling

The hard part of cycling was never the pedalling — it's balancing and steering. Tricycles and training wheels let a child roll forward, but they never teach balance at all.

Balance is the hard part of cycling. Pedalling is the easy part.

The benefits, in short

  • Balance & coordination — kids learn to lean into turns and steer through the handlebars.
  • Confidence — with both feet able to touch the ground, they feel safe to try.
  • Core & leg strength — scooting and balancing build real muscle.
  • An easy jump to a pedal bike — often skipping the training-wheel stage entirely.

What age can my child start?

Most children start around 18 months. The Strider 12 Sport and 12 Pro fit ages 1–4; the Strider 14X fits 3–6 and later converts into a pedal bike. For babies from 6 months, the 2-in-1 Rocking Bike adds a rocking base. What really matters isn't age but inseam versus seat height — see our size guide.

Is a Strider worth it?

Every Strider we sell is new and genuine, TIS (มอก.) certified, and backed by a 2-year warranty through BKK Strider, the official importer — with spare parts and accessories actually stocked in Thailand.
