When Is Your Child Ready to Move from a Balance Bike to Pedals?
Four signs your child is ready for pedals — and why balance-bike kids usually skip training wheels entirely.

Good news for parents who started with a balance bike: moving up to pedals is often surprisingly easy — because your child has already learned the hard part, balance. All that's left is adding the pedalling.
Four signs they're ready
- They glide with feet up for long stretches — balancing confidently on their own.
- They steer and avoid obstacles — good handlebar control.
- They're scooting faster and enjoy the speed — a sign they're comfortable moving.
- They want to try — emotional readiness matters as much as skill.
If your child can glide along with their feet up, they can very nearly ride a two-wheeler already — pedals are all that's missing.
What age?
There's no fixed number. Some children are ready at three, others at five. Look at skill and confidence rather than age, and don't rush — a balance bike has no "expiry date," and giving a child time to master balance is a worthwhile investment.
A bike that makes it easy
The Strider 14X is built for exactly this: start in balance mode, then fit the included pedal kit when your child is ready — no new bike, and no training wheels.
