Balance Bike vs Tricycle vs Training Wheels: Which Is Better?

Tricycles and training wheels roll a child forward but never teach balance. Here's why a balance bike gets them to two wheels sooner.

Balance Bike vs Tricycle vs Training Wheels: Which Is Better?

A question almost every parent asks: start with a tricycle, training wheels, or a balance bike? The answer depends on what skill you want your child to build.

Tricycles

Stable and comfy, and great fun for very young toddlers. But a trike only teaches "pedal forward" — never balance — and it's often heavy and hard for a small child to steer.

Training wheels

They stop a child falling, but the catch is they teach the wrong lean: the child relies on the side wheels instead of balancing. Take them off and many kids have to start learning balance from scratch.

Balance bikes

They teach balance and steering from day one. The child controls the speed with their own feet, so they feel safe and confident. When they move up to a pedal bike, it usually happens with no training-wheel stage at all.

Kids who start on a balance bike typically skip training wheels and get to two wheels sooner.
