Balance Bike Safety and Gear: Helmets, Where to Ride, and the Essentials

A simple safety guide for parents — from choosing and fitting a helmet to picking safe places to ride.

Balance Bike Safety and Gear: Helmets, Where to Ride, and the Essentials

A balance bike is one of the safest toys for a young child — they control the speed with their own feet and stay low to the ground. Still, a few basics matter, and they give both child and parent peace of mind.

The helmet: the one essential

Have your child wear a helmet every time, from day one, so it becomes a habit. How to check the fit:

  • Position — level on the head, about two fingers above the eyebrows, not tipped back.
  • Snugness — it shouldn't slide around when they shake their head, but shouldn't pinch.
  • Straps — the side straps form a "V" under each ear, and you can fit just one finger under the chin strap.
The best helmet is the one that fits and that your child will actually wear every time.

Other protective gear

Knee and elbow pads help in the early days, especially on hard ground, and give a cautious child the confidence to try. Closed, well-fitting shoes matter too, for scooting and braking with the feet.

Choosing safe places to ride

  • Start on flat, wide surfaces — a park path or an open courtyard.
  • Always keep away from cars and roads, as well as steep slopes and water.
  • Supervise closely, especially with the very youngest.

Keep the bike ready

Do a quick check now and then: seat and handlebar tight, wheels spinning freely, and raise the seat as your child grows. Every Strider is genuine, TIS certified, and covered by a 2-year warranty.
