A step-by-step guide to introducing your child to their first balance bike — from setting the seat to that confident first glide.

Your Child's First Ride: A Parent's Guide to Getting Started

You've got the first balance bike — now what? The good news is that most children learn through play. Your job is to set up the right environment and cheer them on. Follow these steps.

1. Set the seat right

Adjust the seat so your child can sit with both feet flat on the ground and knees slightly bent. This is the single most important starting point. Unsure? See our guide to sizing and seat height.

2. Start with walking, not riding

Let them walk the bike around first, to get used to its weight and steering. No rush to lift their feet yet.

3. Build up to gliding

Once they're walking confidently, encourage bigger steps and stronger pushes until they start to glide for short stretches. A very gentle slope helps them feel that glide sooner.

4. Keep it fun, no pressure

Every child takes a different amount of time — a few minutes for some, several weeks for others. All of it is normal. Praise the effort, not just the result.

The goal of day one isn't a child who can ride — it's a child who loves their bike.

Don't forget safety

Always use a well-fitted helmet, and start somewhere flat, wide, and safe, away from cars and roads. Read more in safety and gear.
