Building Balance from 6 Months Old
Your child doesn't need to be walking to start building balance. The Strider 2-in-1 Rocking Bike is really two products in one — a stationary rocker for babies 6–18 months, then a full balance bike once they're ready to stride. Rocking early builds core strength, balance, and familiarity with the handlebars and saddle, so the eventual switch to striding feels natural instead of scary.
4 steps to rocking success
1. Practice together
Sit your baby on the floor next to the bike, within reach. Let them look it over, reach out, or drum on the base. Every baby develops at their own pace — there's no need to rush.
2. Support baby on the bike
Kneel or sit beside your baby and hold them steady while they practice sitting on the seat. The more time spent sitting, the more core strength they build.
3. Ready to rock
Encourage your child to stand on the rocking base by themselves — it'll take some practice. As confidence grows, let them swing a leg over and try a gentle rock.
4. Ready to roll
Watch for the readiness signs below before popping the bike off the rocker. There's no right or wrong time — you can put it on and take it off as often as you like.
Helmets for babies
We recommend a helmet from 12 months old, so your child grows up associating riding with wearing one. Babies younger than 12 months usually have relatively weak neck muscles, so helmets aren't recommended for them yet.
Signs your baby is ready to roll
- Your kiddo is walking.
- They can stand securely on the rocker.
- They get on and off the bike without assistance.
- They can shift their weight from one leg to the other without falling.
Games to play together on the rocker
Peekaboo
Face your baby and give them a gentle rock. Each time they rock forward, count "1, 2, boo!" If they're steady, cover your face as they rock back and reveal it with "boo!" as they come forward.
Rock & look
Face your baby and point out things happening around you — cars, pictures, birds. It helps teach visual awareness and looking around while on the bike.
